You’ve taken the first step
Getting Started
Congrats on taking the first step in this journey! But let’s face it, beginning therapy can be hard, and that’s after what can be a difficult process in simply finding a therapist. Here is a simple step-by-step breakdown of how to get started with me:
After you’ve visited my web site, you decide you’re interested in learning more.
Contact me (email or phone) and let’s plan a time to talk for 10-15 minutes. This consultation is free. It gives me an opportunity to learn more about what you’re looking for and you an opportunity to have your questions answered.
If we decide we’re a mutual fit, I’ll get your information, and we’ll schedule a first appointment.
Before the first session, I will send you a confirmation, directions, and a link to required intake documents you will complete online.
That’s it. I’m looking forward to meeting you!
The First Session(s)
Coming to therapy and meeting someone new can be a nerve-inducing experience. Self-disclosure, your therapist feels that way too. It’s common. Nerves aside, I love first sessions and getting to know you. Here’s what to expect starting out:
The first session is different from all the rest. We begin with introductions and get some basic housekeeping items out of the way.
The goal of the first 1-2 sessions is getting to know you—fully know you—individually, relationally, biologically, emotionally, and socially. As a therapist, I’ve been trained through a systems lens, meaning the full context of your life is important, as you influence and are influenced by the world around you. This may sound like a lot of information (it is) but it’s more of a relaxed conversation between us.
We’ll begin discussing the reason(s) that brought you to seek therapy, which will lead to goals we will develop collaboratively. Those goals will serve as the roadmap for where we go in therapy.
Throughout therapy, we will check-in on progress and make adjustments as needed. You will feel empowered to advocate yourself in this process to ensure it is the best experience it can be for you.
